The history of brown sauce goes way back to the turn of the 20th century. In 1899 Frederick Gibson Garton, a greengrocer in Nottingham, invented the recipe containing tomatoes, molasses, dates, apples, spices and vinegar. He eventually sold the recipe for £150 to Edwin Samson Moore, the owner of the Midlands Vinegar Company.
Today brown sauce is an icon of British culture although it may not be as popular as ketchup, it’s loved by many.
What do you pair brown sauce with?
Pretty much anything! Bangers and Mash, cheesy chips, hamburger meat and a good old fashioned fry up. Depending on your taste brown sauce is like ketchup, perfect for anything!
