A Brief History of the British Fish Finger Sandwich

Fish fingers first appeared in the UK during the 1950s, offering families a convenient and affordable way to enjoy white fish. They quickly became a freezer staple, loved for their crispy coating and versatility.

It wasn't long before someone tucked them between two slices of buttered bread, creating what has become one of Britain's favourite comfort foods. While it may not have the same heritage as the traditional chip butty or bacon sandwich, the fish finger sandwich has become a nostalgic classic for generations.

Today, you'll find gourmet versions on pub menus, café specials and home kitchen tables across the country, proving that sometimes the simplest recipes really are the best.

The Great Fish Finger Sandwich Debate

Ask ten people how they build the perfect fish finger sandwich and you'll probably get ten different answers.

Some swear by classic tartare sauce, whose creamy texture and sharp capers pair beautifully with white fish.

Others insist mature Cheddar cheese is essential, adding richness that melts into the hot fish fingers.

Then there are those who pile on pickled gherkins, crispy lettuce, rocket, sliced tomatoes, or even a layer of mushy peas for a playful twist on fish and chips.

One increasingly popular addition is crushed salt and vinegar crisps, bringing an extra layer of crunch while bringing the vinegar traditionally served with fish and chips. It's a simple addition that transforms the texture of every bite.

Whatever your favourite combination, the best sandwiches all have one thing in common: a balance of crisp, creamy, tangy and fresh flavours.

Why Our Classic Recipe Works So Well

Our recipe keeps everything people love about a traditional fish finger sandwich while adding a few clever upgrades.

Instead of relying solely on ketchup or mayonnaise, we combine Harrisons Tomato Ketchup with our smooth mayonnaise, shredded cabbage, carrot, spring onion and cider vinegar to create a vibrant ketchup slaw. The result is creamy, fresh and tangy, adding colour, crunch and flavour without overpowering the fish.

Homemade fish fingers coated in seasoned panko breadcrumbs deliver a lighter, crispier finish than standard breadcrumbs, while a hint of smoked paprika adds subtle depth. They're then served in toasted brioche buns with the ketchup slaw, crushed salt and vinegar crisps, an extra drizzle of Harrisons Tomato Ketchup and optional pickles for those who like a little extra bite.

Tips for the Best Fish Finger Sandwich

If you're making your own fish fingers, choose firm white fish such as cod, haddock or pollock, as these hold their shape well and develop a wonderfully flaky texture when cooked. Toasting the brioche buns prevents them becoming soggy and adds a subtle buttery flavour, while serving the slaw chilled creates a refreshing contrast with the hot, crispy fish.

Finally, don't be shy with the ketchup. A generous drizzle over the finished sandwich brings all the flavours together and gives every bite the bold, tangy finish that makes this recipe so addictive.

Whether you're reliving childhood memories or discovering this British classic for the first time, our Fish Finger Sandwich with Harrisons Ketchup Slaw & Smashed Crisps is proof that comfort food never goes out of style. It takes everything people love about the original and adds just enough crunch, freshness and bold flavour to make it your new favourite.
